Doktor habilitowana, profesor UwB. Kierownik Zakładu Socjologii Kultury Instytut Socjologii, Uniwersytet w Białymstoku, koordynatorka Centrum Analiz Pogranicza, Wielokulturowości i Migracji. Jej zainteresowania badawcze to: socjologia pogranicza, relacje na pograniczach, kategoria innego, mniejszości społeczne, wielokulturowość.
2005-2007 – koordynatorka i badaczka INTAS Poland – w ramach projektu: "LOCLAB - A dynamics and social impacts of the labor markets on local communities in Eastern European accelerated by the EU-Integration" - Project No. INTAS-04-79-6799 . (INTAS - The International Association for the Promotion of Co-operation with Scientists from the New Independent States (NIS) of the Former Soviet Union is an independent International Association formed by the European Community) . Członek zespołu redakcyjnego pisma „Borders in Globalization Review. W latach 2012-2019 zastępca-redaktora „Pogranicze. Studia społeczne”. W 2019 roku wraz z zespołem badawczym z Norwegii, Litwy i Rosji wydała książkę „Borderology: Cross-disciplinary Insights from the Border Zone, Jan Selmer Methi, Andrei Sergeev, Małgorzata Bieńkowska, Basia Nikiforova (ed), Springer Nature, Cham.
